A Night of Sublime Indian Music

Last night’s performance at Kulcha by Pundit Kumar Bose and Pundit Deboyoti Bose was spellbinding, words would not do it justice.  The salutation Pundit is bestowed on them by their musical peers as a sign of respect.  The brothers have played together all their lives and come from a musical family in Calcutta (Kolkata).

In the first half they played Indian Ragas, Kumar playing Tabla as gentle as a drop of rain and as thunderous as a heard of buffalo.  Meanwhile Deboyoti played the Sarod with interweaving rhythms and medley’s.  They went from gently slow to breathtakingly fast with many breaks for the audience to applaud.

In the second half they were joined by local musician Glen Rogers (guitar) and Josh Hogan (percussion) for a cross cultural mix and friendly musical challenges.

The evening was MC’d by Doug Spencer and opened by the Hon. Nathan Morton.
